Did you know that rings as a symbol of union and commitment can be traced as far back as the Stone Age (quite literally!)? It’s true: as many as two million years ago, cavemen would create chords of braided grass to tie around the waist, wrists and ankles of their chosen mates. Of course, these days rings as a sign of commitment take a slightly more sparkly form. But while engagement ring trends might have changed (and continue to do so), the promise of ever-lasting love and a committed union they symbolize remain the same.

Your engagement ring is undoubtedly one of the most important pieces of jewelry you will ever receive in your life. It stands for romance, eternal love, true partnership, ever-lasting friendship, trust, hope, faith. Little wonder, then, that there is an entire industry dedicated to this one small circle, bejeweled or otherwise.

Advice about what to look for, current trends, do’s and don’ts, how much to spend (hint: spend only what you can afford – it doesn’t have to break the bank to be meaningful), and everything else engagement ring, takes up more than its fair share of Internet space. Yes: it can be overwhelming. Not sure where to start in your search for your perfect engagement ring? Start here – with our top 5 trends in engagement rings right now.

1. Trend #1: Color, color, and more color

Colored diamonds (think canary, yellow, black, pink, even grey) are rising in popularity, but even more exciting is the increase in the popularity of gemstones… the rainbow really is the limit! Right now, color is probably the most noticeable trend on the hands of new brides and brides-to-be: blues, purples, pinks, greens, or even a combination thereof! (See Trend #2: Multi-stone – sometimes even multi-colored, multi-stone – settings.) If that classic clear diamond doesn’t speak to your soul, no matter how sparkly, don’t be afraid to embrace the rainbow!
Another option? Pair your classic, high clarity white diamond with colored stones – pink and blue sapphires are very on trend right now – then replicate those three colors in a matching stacking band, another popular trend.

The addition of color offers a vibrant burst of sparkle which perfectly matches the feelings of joy it is reflective of!

2. Trend #2: Multi-stone settings

A classic solitaire is still, and always will be, stunning. But it’s not to everyone’s taste. More and more, ring designers are finding ways to set stones in linear clusters, stacked settings, or spaced settings, to create unique rings that still pack the wow-factor of a great, big, sparkling rock!

Whether the stones are delicate and petite or big and bold; one shape and size, or variety of forms and proportions; one color or multi-colored, a multi-stoned setting can really make your ring finger stand out from the crowd!

If bling is your thing, you can add oomph and maximum bling factor, by going for alternating shapes and colors: pears, baguettes, emerald cuts, rounds; pinks, purples, greens, blues, reds…
Love the multi-stoned setting but prefer a little less flash? In a terribly romantic gesture symbolizing two souls becoming one, Napoleon Bonaparte put a two-stoned diamond/sapphire engagement ring on Josephine de Beauharnais’s ring finger in 1796, thus introducing the ‘Toi et Moi’ engagement ring to the world of trend setters. More recently, Prince Harry put a three-stone engagement ring on Meghan Markle’s finger, a trilogy symbolizing friendship, love and fidelity, or, a couple’s past, present and future. (Again, you can add a little more drama by playing with color, size and type of stone on each of these.)

Whatever your multi-stone, non-standard setting of choice, know this: oohs and aahs do come standard.

3. Trend #3: All shapes and sizes

As already introduced in Trend #2 above, engagement rings which play with shape and size are also increasingly popular, creating a ring which is guaranteed to garner attention. Elongated cuts in particular – oval, emerald, pear and elongated cushion cut – have been seen on the fingers of plenty of fashionable brides-to-be recently (hello JLo!), and we can’t see this trend disappearing any time soon.

Want to get really fancy and unique? Opt for fancy cut side stone accents, which play on both shape, size and multi-stoned trends. Or make your main stone the main attraction by using a unique shape like the marquise and heart shaped cut. And for those ‘old souls’ out there who love nothing more than the vintage beauties showcased on the fingers of brides of yore? The rose cut engagement ring, a flat bottom and domed top shaped to resemble a rose bud and popular in the 1950s, has made a huge comeback. (Bonus: it’s a clever way to make your main diamond look bigger, giving you more bling for your buck.)

Different shapes like these give the modern bride a more understated way to show their unique personality without getting too experimental with color, size and out-there design.

4. Trend #4: Sustainability and a story

The move to sustainability – in diamonds, precious metals, gemstones, food, clothing, and everything in between – is hardly a new trend. But it is an ever-increasing important one. Transparency in terms of both origin and practices and protocols of procuring the materials for your chosen ring, as well as sustainability, are more than just trendy though. They are an important shift in the way the world works to ensure a world for future generations.

Today’s couples about to tie the knot, also want to tie their ring, and other choices into the story of who they are and what they believe. This means aligning their personal values with the brands and products they buy and wear. This gives them an opportunity to add to the greater good, and it delivers an authentic story about where and how their ring is made! We like to think of it as a love story between partners and Mother Earth!

5. Trend #5: YOU

Trends come and trends go. You know what is everlasting? True love. Let your engagement ring be a story of your true love, a reflection of your personality, your style, your partner’s unbreakable bond to you. In other words: forget what everyone else is wearing, what everyone else’s ring looks like. Forget what the latest ‘hot’ trend or fashion in engagement rings is. Think only of what you love. What your style is. Find a ring that you will want to wear day in and day out for years to come, that says nothing about fashion or trends, and everything about you. That may well be a ring that’s very trendy right now, and won’t be in 10 years time. Or it may be one that is considered old-fashioned and out-of-date now, but which may well be in fashion again in 20 years. But, honestly, who cares? If you love it, that is all that matters.
